God Still Hates Fred Phelps
Thanks to several responses on my blog and others, including my good friend who sent me this link by email with the subject line “More than you ever wanted to know about Fred Phelps.” What an eye-opener!
Sit down before you read it:

I am a liberal person, a writer, and an outspoken citizen that values her freedom of speech as much as anyone. I was also raised a Baptist, and even though I consider myself more spiritual than religious, I remember clearly the teachings of the church.
It is clear that Topeka, Kansas has been disrupted in many ways by Phelps and his foul-mouthed, abusive crew of litigious hatemongers, aka, his extended family. And I am appalled that the Baptist churches in Topeka, Kansas do not come out against Fred Phelps and his “church,” a title he hides behind in order to avoid paying taxes. God has nothing to do with it.
Why would the real Baptists not publicly condemn such open displays of hatred? Surely Phelps does not represent them and their beliefs… although their silence on the issue would indicate otherwise. We all know you can condone many things by turning away, pretending it doesn’t exist, or just by remaining quiet.
And Topeka’s local government and mainline Baptist churches are supporters by default, by NOT SPEAKING OUT.
It is no wonder that businesses don’t want to go to Topeka. I wouldn’t hold a convention, a business meeting, a job interview, or even have a cup of coffee in Topeka… I wouldn’t want to risk being confronted by these emotionally unstable people, who according to the Topeka police department, have the legal right to shout obscenities in my face.
I believe a complete boycott of Topeka might get some attention. A boycott on new economic investments, on new business developments, on existing businesses, on tourism, and especially on employment or relocation. No sane person would want to conduct business or live and work in that kind of atmosphere.
If Topeka were hit hard enough in the wallet, maybe then the Topeka Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, whose purpose is to promote tourism and economic development would be forced to investigate a problem they have so far ignored. Perhaps the city government will find it in their best interest to quiet Phelps or make him disappear. Tie him to a raft and let him go out to sea. Who cares?
I think the residents of Topeka would agree that life without Phelps might be interpreted as proof that there is a God after all. And that He really hates Fred Phelps.

You miss the point. You want people to do EXACTLY what the Phelps cult wants them to do– create a huge public response that raises them up and allows them to be heard.
Ever major church and city official has condemned them years ago. the way we found to not give them attention that they crave is to ignore them.
Sadly, you are as radical as they are in your urging city officials to just “make them disappear.” from what fascist rock did that thought crawl out of?

Have you read about how the city officials allow this to happen, sir? Did you know the ex-police chief was found to have ordered his officers to never arrest or file a complaint against these people. What do you suggest? Putting up with it?
